That same attention to the
importance of food can be found at Mamacitas. Ingredients are fresh and
colorful and almost exclusively made in-house (the one exception is the
jalapeño poppers that come into the restaurant pre-made, but the mango
salsa that comes with them is freshly made). They proudly let the dining
public know that they don’t even have a microwave, so nothing is
zapped before service. They also make all their food sans lard. In fact,
you won’t find any flesh of the swine on their menu at all. So there
really are truly vegetarian dishes on the menu–no hidden meat products
here. And while there are very traditional dishes on the menu, there are
also some items with a very Boulder take to them. The Climbers Plate,
for example, I am going to assert isn’t something often found on the
menu in Puebla but very appreciated here.
And given how long Mamacitas has
been a popular restaurant, the menu is indeed appreciated....more

Ai,
Mamacitas! Aguacate Enchiladas! Chicken Posole! Arroz con Pollo!
Mole! The very words roll off the tongue like the exotic treats that
they are. This little restaurant-only about 10 tables and some bar and
counter space- has a menu that features all of the standard fare you
find in Mexican restaurants here in the United States-tacos, burritos,
quesadillas, fajitas-and a good selection of more interesting and
unusual dishes. It is decorated with dozens of miniature hanging baskets
and piñatas as well as colorful murals and paintings on the walls. The
tiled tables and ubiquitous Corona posters make sure you know you are in
a Mexican restaurant.
The menu boasts "no lard, no
pork, no microwave," and a good number of interesting options for
the non-meat eater...more

in a friendly, eclectic and buzzing atmosphere.
The Food
The family-own, family-run restaurant and cantina appeals to the sizable
"watch-what-you-eat" crowd in Boulder. For example, the cooks
use white cheese (not pasteurized yellow cheese) and use a number of
alternatives to frying. What little is fried is done in 100 percent
veggie oil. Of course, you don't need to watch the calories to enjoy
your meal. The huge nachos can run as much as $13 (with tax and chicken
added) but offer a true mountain of corn tortilla chips topped with
beans, cheese, lettuce, jalapenos, guacamole and sour cream. The
camarones en salsa rojo is especially nice. The classic dish is made by sautéing
a dozen tender shrimp in a spicy red salsa and then serving over a bed
of red rice. Eat the shrimp in flour tortillas with beans, lettuce,
tomatoes, sour cream and enchilada sauce.
The Setting
The restaurant is appropriately funky for this college crowd. Grab a
table under the plethora of small baskets that hang from the ceiling and
spend time checking out the variety of pictures and photos on the walls.

This summer, want to enjoy a margarita and a burrito
outside in the nice summer breeze? Head on over to Mamacita's on the
Hill. Jay Epstein, co-owner of Mamacita's, appeared before the City
of Boulder's Planning Board Thursday night seeking approval to build
a 12-seat patio in front of his Hill restaurant that would remain
open until 2 a.m.
And approval he got. The Planning Board
voted unanimously to approve the addition of a patio, saying such
business improvements would lead to a livelier Hill.
“By and
large this is the place you would want to focus your activity late
at night,” said Elise Jones, Planning Board member.
Thursday,
Epstein stood in front of the Planning Board and asked to be treated
fairly and held to the same standards as the rest of Boulder.
“In such a difficult market we're trying to be
competitive right now with not just our neighbors, but the rest of
Boulder,” he said. “If it's a nice evening and people want to drink
outside or eat outside they would go elsewhere.” ....more

It's been
a long two years, and Jay Epstein, co-owner of Mamacita's Mexican
restaurant on the Hill, is eagerly awaiting a decision - hopefully it's
the one he wants. “The Hill, in general, needs to be treated fairly and
equally with Pearl Street,” Epstein told the Colorado Daily Wednesday.
Epstein will be appearing in front of the City of Boulder's Planning
Board this evening to discuss his application to build a patio in front
of the restaurant that would accommodate 12 seats. The kicker is: the
patio would remain open until 2 a.m., and from 11 p.m. until 2 a.m.
would provide appetizer and bar service. ...more

Boulder residents, students and tourists enjoy about
300 days of sunshine, but restaurant and bar owners know the night
hours are just as pleasant for eating and drinking as the
daytime.
The City of Boulder's Planning Board on Thursday
unanimously approved extended hours for a patio outside Mamacita's,
a Mexican restaurant on the Hill. Some business and homeowners
believe this outdoor patio - which will be open until 2 a.m. - could
bring more people and business to the Hill. In the past few years,
the Hill's popularity as a hotspot for people to hang out, eat and
shop has dwindled.
“Now we can compete with every bar and
restaurant on Pearl,” said Jay Epstein, co-owner of Mamacita's. “It
means we're able to be competitive in Boulder.” ...more

After a two year battle with the University Neighborhood Hill
Association, Mamacitas Restaurante Y Cantina has received the go from Boulder
officials to build its patio.
At a meeting Wednesday night, March 22, the City of Boulder
Planning Board shut down an appeal and gave the final approval for Mamacitas to
build a 12-seat patio and offer full services — including liquor sales — until 2
a.m. The victory, which Mamacitas owner Jay Epstein described as “huge,” ends an
almost two-year struggle with the UNHA over the patio. Mamacitas was forced to
undergo a use review in November 2005, which was finished and conditionally
approved in mid-December by the Boulder planning staff. Two appeals of the
decision, one from UNHA member Jan Otto, prompted Wednesday’s hearing. ...more
